Interview with a Director

November 10, 2009
by

Okay, so it’s not exactly an interview with a vampire, but if you’ve ever survived a tech week, you know that the hours are similar. Gayl Miller and I sat down last night for a quick interview for her upcoming show, Christmas Belles.  It opens this weekend at the VBC Playhouse.

It was my first attempt at an in-the-field interview, and I’d like to think it went well.  On the Digital Recording Device, it sounded pretty good.  I haven’t edited it yet, but that’s okay.  I’ll have it ready for Thursday, when Episode 3 comes out.

Christmas Belles is a Theatre Huntsville production.  It hits the stage this weekend with a cast of thousands… or at least a dozen.  Tickets are available from the Theatre Huntsville office, visit their website for more information.

Episode Two…Finally

November 6, 2009
by

Yes, it’s finally here. Episode two of Beyond The Boards is available.

In this timely episode we discuss the passing of two great theater supporters, Sarah’s Soapbox returns and a new segment, Jenni and Michael Theater Reviews.

Okay, so maybe not as timely as it should be, but at least it is out.  And I have some big announcements coming in the future.  So stay tuned here.  Now, on with the show!

Listen to Episode Two NOW!

Congratulations to the Wings Award Winners

October 28, 2009

I was bad last night.  I didn’t watch twitter, I didn’t call anyone today.  As I write this, I have no idea who won the Wings Awards last night and who didn’t.  I assumed Bryan Comer would have called me if I won, so I assume I didn’t, and that means all is right in the world.

But without knowing who has won, I still offer my hearty congratulations to the winners.  While I have my problems with the craziness that is Wings Award Judging, in the end it is the only comparison of quality that exists between the various theater groups.  I’m sure I’ll be talking about the problems between the two “major” award systems as time goes on, but this isn’t the time.  Instead, if you know a Wings winner, give them a pat on the back for a job well done.

Now, about the podcast.  Yea, it’s late.  I’ve had a tough time lately, and I’m moving the podcast from the free and convoluted world of wordpress.com and heading out on my own with my own domain.  It’ll make lots of things easier, including maintaining the podcast in one place instead of spread out across the three different locations that it now resides.  I don’t want to get technical, but it really will make things easier.

So now that award season is behind us, I’ll be talking winners and losers… including those that didn’t get a nomination but should have.  We’ll look at upcoming seasons and what groups think they may be doing next season.  And I’ll be looking at current casts and upcoming auditions.

The move to the new home will be complete soon.  Watch here, or on our twitter feed, for the announcement.  And we’ll see you next, beyond the boards.

Wings Tonight

October 27, 2009

Good luck to everyone (except me) nominated for a Wings Award.  This year’s nominations are as scattered and bizarre as ever.  Exactly how I could get a nomination for sound and Jim Jones, who hand crafted the amazing costumes for Monster in the Closet, didn’t is beyond me.  Jim’s monsters were amazing.  My sound was adequate.  This is not the only weirdness.

That’s not to say that there aren’t some truly worthwhile shows nominated.  There always are.  It’s just the oversights and weird nominations that surprise me.

I’ll not be at wings tonight but will be watching the live tweets from the show.  (At least, I hope so) and will be putting out the next episode of Beyond the Boards tomorrow.  Complete with updates on the winners and losers of this years Wings.

Till then!

Wings Nominations

October 9, 2009
by

The Wings Nominations are out, and some of the best talent in town got nominations this year.  Guess I’ll have to try and pony up the bucks to attend, since I got nominated too.  That’s right, the host of Beyond the Boards got nominated for Best Sound.  It’s pretty much a joke, but I’ll take the nomination.

Here’s a list of the rest of the nominations.  I’ll be talking about it on the next show.  Which is due out any time now, if I can get things settled down enough to finish up a few things.

Really.

I swear.

The Theatre Community Loses a Supporter…

October 9, 2009

Mary SpannI’m freshly home from the visitation of Mary Spann.  Mary died this past Sunday.

Mary may not have been well known in community theater, and that’s a shame.  She was a solid supporter of our endeavors, being a season ticket holder of both Broadway Theater League and Theatre Huntsville.  For those who remember Theatre Round The Corner, she was involved in that project as well.

Tomorrow I’ll help carry her to her final resting place.  She was an incredible woman, and I’ll miss her greatly, for she was also my mother-in-law.

So this weeks intended edition of Beyond The Boards is a bit late.  I hope you understand.  And the next episode will be dedicated to Mary Spann, with more information about her.  So please, tune in and listen.
